Golder Ranch Fire District Deploys DRUID to Support a Safer Workplace

Located in northern Pima and Pinal counties in Arizona, the Golder Ranch Fire District (GRFD) provides fire protection, emergency medical services, and public safety education. GRFD is a world-class fire district known for prioritizing the health and well-being of its firefighters through comprehensive training, mental health resources, and wellness programs.

Addressing GRFD’s Challenge

GRFD employs a team of firefighters, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, fire inspectors, and administrative personnel. Concerned about fatigue in their ranks, as well as any form of impairment, GRFD leadership selected the DRUID fit-for-duty app to help ensure that suppression personnel can perform their duties safely and effectively.

DRUID is a cognitive assessment app that applies neuroscience to detect and measure workplace performance impairment from any cause, including fatigue, severe stress, acute illness, alcohol, other drugs, extreme heat, and injury (including concussion). The app connects to DRUID Enterprise, a management portal that allows monitoring and analysis of score data across job functions, departments, and locations.

Using DRUID to Monitor Fatigue and Readiness

GRFD follows a structured shift schedule to ensure continuous emergency response services. The district operates on a three-platoon system, consisting of A, B, and C shifts. Under the 3/4 shift schedule, firefighters work three 24-hour shifts within a five-day cycle, followed by four consecutive days off. This rotation provides sufficient rest between shifts while maintaining 24/7 emergency coverage for the community.

DRUID has been rolled out to the platoons to measure and monitor the workforce through periodic testing before, during, and after shifts. Aggregate DRUID scores will be used to assess the effectiveness of the current 3/4 work schedule. Later this year, as GRFD transitions to a trial 48/96 schedule—with 48 hours on duty followed by 96 hours off—DRUID will also evaluate its impact on operational readiness, firefighter well-being, and overall performance.

Commitment to Safety and Excellence

GRFD is dedicated to protecting lives and property through rapid response, professional excellence, and active community engagement. DRUID is designed to enhance these efforts, supporting GRFD’s mission to continually improve safety and the quality of life for those they serve.
