In 2025, Zurich Insurance Group, one of the world’s largest public companies, once again spotlighted global startup innovation through its prestigious annual Zurich Innovation Championship. Out of more than 3,000 entrants worldwide, Impairment Science’s DRUID app was chosen one of six finalists. DRUID was the only impairment detection technology (IDT) finalist .

“We’re thrilled to have been recognized by Zurich as a leading solution to significantly reduce accident risk and improve safety,” said Rob Schiller, CEO of Impairment Science Inc. “Being selected as a finalist by Zurich validates our mission and the science behind DRUID. We’re looking to visionary insurance leaders to support this technology in operational environments.

Launched in 2018, the Zurich Innovation Championship has become a launchpad for startup–insurer collaboration and a cornerstone of Zurich’s innovation strategy. This venture-client program invites groundbreaking solutions that address insurance’s most pressing challenges.

Impairment detection technologies (IDTs) span a broad range—from biosensors and performance-based assessments to cognitive and neurobehavioral analysis tools. They are used in safety-critical industries such as transportation, manufacturing, construction, and healthcare to assess impairment caused by fatigue, substances, or cognitive decline. Until now, many of these tests have been expensive, slow, or only moderately accurate—making DRUID’s advantages in accuracy, speed, and cost especially noteworthy.

Using innovative, patent-pending algorithms informed by neuroscience, DRUID delivers fast, reliable, data-driven results that connect to DRUID Enterprise, DRUID’s back-end database and management portal. DRUID Enterprise seamlessly integrates with workplace safety protocols—ideal for time-and-safety sensitive environments. “Our mission is simple: make impairment testing easy, fast, accurate, and inexpensive so that it becomes the new safety standard across industries,” added Schiller.

By delivering faster and more accurate impairment detection, DRUID can dramatically reduce accident-related insurance claims, lower operational costs, and improve safety outcomes in high-risk industries. As workplaces increasingly prioritize preventive technology, DRUID—and similar innovations—have the potential to redefine the standard for risk mitigation and operational productivity.
